Botanist
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 08:28AM
This gorgeous series of tables and benches, called Botanist, was designed by Brandon Lynne and Dario Antonioni. They are made out of cut and bent aluminum covered in a glossy high impact powder coat or a natural wood veneer. Their simple shape, combined with the use of materials allows these benches fit nicely into any environment, indoor or out.

I really like the use of mixed materials. Interweaving wood and aluminum is a neat idea. This approach builds on and improves the original purpose of plywood, stabilizing the expansion and contraction during the seasons and improving strength. Too many designers get trapped in traditional methods and materials.
I know Brandon! He's a good friend of Mike Roller's and I think Brett knows him too. Anyway, I always liked his style and I like how they make simple things more beautiful by adding the vector based details, taking what's fairly typical in print graphics to another dimension (pardon the pun!).
The first time I saw this line, a few months back, it was actually the product photography that held my attention. They did some amazing product shots on a beach and in a wheat field that really sold the whole indoor-outdoor aspect to me. I'm posting it now because I just saw them at ICFF. In person, it was the interesting use of materials that I was more intrigued with. I don't normally think of powder coated metal as being elegant but it really works. The metal and wood complement each other nicely still manage to fit in with the colored pieces.
Apparently I met Brandon at ICFF - I had no idea. Haha... sorry Brandon, maybe we will meet again sometime.
