Ivan Tihienko's Augmented Reality
Friday, October 24, 2008 at 12:29AM Ian Tihienko takes on augmented reality as his Bezalel academy of Arts and Design final project. In his vision, cell phones and computers are replaced by holographic shadows. Interfaces are projected over the ground for activities such as playing games, writing messages to others, or navigating. This was really cool. If it ever makes it into production, life on the streets will be forever changed. : D
Augmented reality? I'm not impressed by a little After Effects work on some cheesy interface. Maybe this is cool for someone who's not into the field, but for anyone remotely affiliated with interaction design this is just very cliché and very, very poorly presented.
this stuff is real check out ted talks augmented reality "6th sence" http://www.ted.com/talks/pattie_maes_demos_the_sixth_sense.html
When augmented reality glasses become cheaper and more common, then this WILL be possible.
A small, yet powerful pocket computer device would handle the hard work of processing, and could wirelessly tell the glasses where the digital objects are placed.
Menus like this, displayed on either the floor, or a floating digital screen in front of you, would be a perfectly easy and possible way of interacting with it.
In 10 years or so such a glasses/portablecomputer setup could replace cell phones, and even computers themselves. It would CERTAINLY be a more advanced way of getting information and interacting with computers.
