Judge a Book by its Cover
Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 08:11PM Come on designers, you know you judge a book by its cover. But just how accurate are you? Test your skills on Judgeby.com, a website that allows you to guess a book's Amazon rating just by looking at its cover.
I was pretty actuate at this. Which makes me think one of two things: A well designed cover reflects well on a book OR people who write good books are smart enough to appreciate a well designed cover. More thoughts? (Found through A Collective Knot).

Then again judging a book's quality by its Amazon rating can be tricky because people tend to give an inordinate number of 5 and 1 star ratings. Normally one would expect that most frequent score would be 3 and that the rating would function kind of like a bell curve but I bet that if you could see their two most frequent ratings they would be 5 and 1 even though the majority of all books written are not the best or worst book ever.
Almost all the ratings are 5 stars. Makes this less interesting. If they also showed the average for users on the site, that might be nice.
I recently went book shopping and decided against a title only
to unknowingly pick it up for a closer look in it's alternate
cover paperback form. As a designer, my discovery brought a
little smile to my face and I left the store with an increased
appreciation of a covers influence on the consumer, not the
book.
